Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
