The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
