Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
