As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
